Becca Cerra is an artist whose work blends elements of performance with conceptual metal sculpture. She also creates functional metal art and teaches blacksmith and welding classes at the Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center. This series of images follows her efforts in creating a figurative metal sculpture for an annual body image art competition, sponsored by the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals. She intended the sculpture to represent her personal journey through recovery.

This project has since evolved to a new direction: “Hallucinations, Physical Forms, Mental Distortions.” She writes that this new work will encompass “a full-length performance with several dancers moving in wearable steel sculptures… (creating) a physical, tangible representation of living with mental illness.”

Although still a work in progress, I believe these photos provide a view into Becca’s creative practice that is interesting to contemplate. To learn more about her work, please visit her website: www.beccacerra.com
