To document an An Opera Theater’s production of The Rape of Lucretia, from initial read-through and rehearsals, to live performance, was an inspiring and challenging opportunity. It was fascinating to attend early table readings, and observe the performers as they got to know one another, rehearse their lines, and explored the depth of this story. Producer Kelly Turpin and director Teresa Mock parlayed nuance and historical references, which lifted the narrative off the pages. Each actor profoundly exhibited the intent and motivations behind their character. Voices were hauntingly beautiful in every rehearsal I witnessed.
Unfortunately, just before the opera could be staged, production had to be postponed due to rising pandemic conditions. This story, while set in ancient times, was chosen because it remains highly relevant in today’s cultural and political climate. AOT still hopes to stage this performance in the near future.
